Since 2002, at least two kinds of laboratory-testable, solid-state Maxwell demons have been proposed that utilize the electric field energy of an open-gap n-p junction and that seem to challenge the validity of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. In the present paper we present some arguments against the alleged functioning of such devices.

Certains auteurs germanophones contemporains exploitent la discordance entre la présence attendue du déterminant du groupe nominal (GN) en allemand et l’absence d’actualisateur pour coder une variété germano-turque, désignée par le terme Kiez, qui signifie métonymiquement « langage des quartiers ». Un exemple en est la menace rituelle « ich mach dich messer », qu’on pourrait traduire littéralement par : « je te fais couteau » et qui correspond pragmatiquement à une signification de type « tu vas avoir affaire à (...) mon couteau ». L’absence de tout déterminant pour le substantif Messer met en scène une langue inhabituelle pour le lecteur germanophone. La contribution analyse les réalisations et leurs effets chez deux auteurs germano-turcs contemporains : Feridun Zaimoglu dans le recueil Kanak Sprak, écrit dans cette « langue de canaques », et Emine Sevgi Özdamar dans l’ensemble de titre Mutterzunge, « Langue de la mère ». A Segunda Conferência Geral do Episcopado Latino-americano, realizada na cidade de Medellín, entre os dias 24 de agosto e 06 de setembro de 1968, produziu um importante e significativo documento – As Conclusões de Medellín – que registraram as posições da Igreja da América Latina, que assumiu uma posição libertadora frente à opressão no continente. O objetivo do Papa Paulo VI, como diz o próprio título da proposta da Conferência, era ler a realidade latino-americana à luz do Concílio Vaticano II. (...) Os bispos fizeram mais do que isso: leram o Concílio à luz da realidade latino-americana. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste artigo, a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, é apresentar alguns elementos da realidade política e eclesial de Medellín e analisar dois aspectos do documento: a educação e a juventude. A década de 1960 e, particularmente o ano de 1968, são momentos históricos efervescentes, contexto da guerra-fria, impactando muitas mudanças. Igreja assume de forma clara o trabalho de inserção nas comunidades pobres. A educação passa a ser pensada numa perspectiva libertadora, há a inserção dos religiosos nas comunidades de base. A juventude católica assume compromissos socais e políticos. Em Medellín ganha identidade própria a Igreja latino-americana e uma forma original de fazer teologia, a teologia da libertação e sua opção pelos pobres. Também o exercício da colegialidade dá passos importantes, inclusive na forma de elaboração do documento. Portanto, celebrar 50 anos desse documento deve levar o olhar crítico para seus valores e limitações e recuperar seus avanços, contribuindo para o debate no campo das Ciências da Religião. (shrink)

Criado em 2007, o Projeto de Extensão “Oficinas Itinerantes: recriando mundo(s)”, da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais, campus de Poços de Caldas, é uma experiência indissociável de pesquisa, ensino e extensão. Com esse título “recriando mundos” buscamos expressar a própria experiência que nos tem sido possível vivenciar ao longo dos anos de realização desse projeto. Nossa experiência está teoricamente referenciada pela compreensão que os pensadores alemães Mestre Eckhart (1260-1327) e Martin Heidegger (1888-1976) apresentam acerca do que é o ser (...) humano em sua existência. Tal compreensão se exprime no fenômeno da serenidade ( Gelassenheit ), compreendido como um deixar ser o que simplesmente somos. As nossas pesquisas sobre esse fenômeno da Gelassenheit (serenidade) norteiam as relações que estabelecemos com a comunidade externa e nos levam a compreender que a existência do ser humano, na sua condição essencial, é uma existência compartilhada. O outro se impõe a nós sem que nós possamos deixar de ser solidários aos seus medos e angústias, pois esses mesmos medos e angústias são também possibilidades nossas. Essa relação de consideração faz de todos nós (professores, alunos, comunidade) solidários em nossa angústia existencial diante do inesperado, do desconhecido. L’enjeu de ce recueil est de contribuer à repenser la notion de limite, en l’envisageant sous les différentes figures, philosophiques, écologiques, politiques, que lui confère notre présent. Comme le montrent, sous des modalités diverses, les contributions de ce collectif, la limite peut et doit être conçue en dehors des valeurs négatives – borne, restriction ou frontière –, qui en affaiblissent la portée. Elle peut alors être pensée sur le fond de cet illimité où s’ouvre la question même du dehors. Si (...) la finitude demeure la condition de l’existence, de l’art et de la pensée, assumer notre condition finie ne consiste donc pas à se murer dans le connu, mais bien à en transgresser les bornes, et ce faisant, à s’illimiter. Au plus loin de la fermeture des frontières que prônent certaines politiques, ou de la certitude dogmatique dans laquelle certains cherchent à réassurer leur pensée, la limite ne vit que de son rapport fécond à l’illimité. Interrogeant l’existence, la politique, l’art – autant dire, la pensée même –, les textes de ce recueil mettent au jour un certain don de l’illimité. (shrink)

Dans cet article nous esquisserons les contours d’une phénoménologie de ce que nous appellerons la tolérance « active » conçue comme une attitude consistant en l’approbation du comportement et des codes culturels d’autrui, par opposition à une tolérance « passive » plus proche de la définition classique de la tolérance comme pâtir. Pour ce faire nous nous appuierons sur un essai (1965) du phénoménologue germano-américain Herbert Spiegelberg consacré précisément à une phénoménologie de l’approbation (ou de l’appréciation). Notre principal objectif (...) sera de décrire aussi précisément que possible la structure intentionnelle relativement complexe de l’acte au cœur de la tolérance active et de le distinguer d’autres types d’acte apparemment similaires en mettant au jour ses fondements dans des états-de-choses axiologiques. Notre objectif secondaire sera de réfléchir à la manière dont cette analyse peut nourrir une phénoménologie interculturelle. (shrink)

Ceux d’hier ou les nouveaux, alors, l’Est et l’Ouest. Leur rivalité pour l’espace nous référait à l’entre-deux du cosmos et de l’humain ; le cosmos, repère d’entre-deux. En microphysique, à chaque particule, son antiparticule. Le proton en noyau, les électrons alentour mais aussi le neutron. En cosmologie : rayonnement centrifuge des (...) étoiles ; gravitation centripète jusqu’au trou noir. Le monde du vivant n’est pas en reste. De la cellule à l’être pluricellulaire. De la scissiparité à la reproduction sexuée. Entre-deux du monde végétal et du monde animal ; de l’humain ouvert à l’infini et de l’univers plein. Mais s’ils se sentent vides, les humains tombent dans des absolus qui les opposent parfois jusqu’au meurtre de l’autre. L’antidote : vivre, penser, inventer les entre-deux de l’histoire et des civilisations. The in-between, we meet it: it is my neighbour. For me, it was present in the intercultural trainings-searches for the Services of the youths: French-German, German-Polish, French-from Quebec. The others: enemies or allies? Those of yesterday or the new, then, the East and the West. Their rivalry for space referred to us in the in-between of the cosmos and the human being; the cosmos, the mark of the in-between. In microphysics, in every particle, its antiparticle. The proton in core, electrons surrounding but also the neutron. In cosmology: brilliance of spin-dries stars; centripetal gravitation up to the black hole. Le Monde of the alive is not outdone. From the cell to the being pluricellulaire. But if they feel empty, the human beings fall in absolutes, which sometimes bring them to the murder others. En ce moment propice aux débats sur la Constitution, la souveraineté du peuple, la démocratie directe, cet essai veut donner un aperçu historique, politique et philosophique du problème, à partir d'une seule idée directrice repensée dans la perspective de la "théorie mimétique" de René Girard : l'opposition établie par Giovanni Lobrano entre le "modèle ancien ou romain", seul vrai modèle républicain, et le "modèle moderne ou germano-anglais", d'origine féodale.

Le but de la présente étude est d’établir un bilan aussi complet que possible des grandes lignes de la recherche des vingt dernières années en théologie sacramentaire. Pour cela, l’auteur commence par une analyse sélective des communications données au Colloque des RSR qui s’est tenu à Chantilly du 28 au 30 juin 1986 afin de déceler les courants majeurs qui se retrouvent par la suite dans les travaux de recherche théologique postérieurs à cette époque. Dans une deuxième partie, il retrace (...) le fruit des travaux recensés entre 1987 et 2001 dans les bulletins critiques des RSR, ce qui, soit dit en passant, justifie que l’ensemble de ce dossier soit dédié à la mémoire de Henri Bourgeois, décédé prématurément en 2001. Un tel itinéraire permet de se faire une idée de tout ce qui a été élaboré sur le sujet par des auteurs, surtout franco-, anglo-, germano- et italophones. En dernier lieu, sont données quelques propositions du point de vue d’un théologien systématique, dogmaticien, engagé lui-même comme acteur dans cette recherche.The purpose of the present study is to assess as completely as possible the principal areas of research during the past 20 years of sacramental theology. To that end, the author begins with a selective analysis of papers given at the Colloquium of RSR, which was held at Chantilly from the 28th to the 30th of June 1986. His goal was to identify major contributions that influenced theological research during the period that followed. The second part retraces the fruit of the works reviewed between 1987 and 2001 in the critical bulletins of the RSR , which we can say in passing, justified the dedication of the whole dossier to the memory of Henri Bourgeois, who died prematurely in 2001. Such an approach provides a broad perspective of the contributions made on the subject by authors, especially French-, English-, German-, and Italian-speaking. Finally, some proposals represent the view of a systematic, dogmatic theologian who was himself engaged as a participant in this research. (shrink)

A presença do componente curricular Ensino Religioso – ER na escola, de modo especial na escola pública, é marcada pela controvérsia. O Brasil viveu sob o manto da confessionalidade, mesmo depois do decreto n. 119A, e a separação legislativo-jurídica entre Igreja e Estado não pôs fim ao problema. A partir dessa perspectiva, o objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre a configuração atual do Ensino Religioso na escola pública, a partir de breve referência inicial aos antecedentes históricos e aos aspectos filosóficos (...) deste processo, que permitiram essa situação, desde a implantação do regime republicano no país. Quer considerar o problema de o Ensino Religioso estar sempre marcado por um discurso conflitivo entre os pressupostos da laicidade e da confessionalidade. O itinerário foi norteado pela seguinte questão: como analisar as mudanças e alterações que fizeram com que este componente curricular passasse da área eclesiástica para a esfera pública? Será que o Ensino Religioso é um problema para a laicidade? A metodologia utilizada é a pesquisa bibliográfica, qualitativa e documental, através da análise de documentos constitucionais, leis de diretrizes e bases da educação, pareceres e resoluções que envolveram esse componente curricular, bem como discursos de juristas em diversas épocas. Ao se investigar este tema, percebe-se que a discussão sobre o Ensino Religioso, bem como a compreensão de sua presença na escola pública, envolve uma complexa discussão, que não pode desconhecer os aspectos históricos, filosóficos e jurídicos. Fourty years ago, more than 190 Latin American bishops, attended by the newly elected Pope John Paul II, were gathered for the III General Conference of the Latin American Episcopate in Mexico, in Puebla de Los Angeles, between January 27th and February 13th, 1979. For Paul VI, The purpose of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Medellin was to translate his Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi to Latin America: from “evangelization in the contemporary world” to “Latin America’s evangelization in the present and (...) in the future”. The context was very disturbed for social, economic, cultural and political reality, as well as for the religious situation. Military dictatorships, torture, death and disappearance of thousands of people, resistance guerrillas, the emergence of neoliberalism, the right and neo-pentecostalism, and the election of a pope who lived under communist persecution in Poland, this was the environment that affected the Conference. In this moment of four decades celebration of this important event, the purpose of the article is to make memory of the socio-political and ecclesial context, besides recovering out two themes that are associated with the authors research: youth and education. The method is defined as content and document analysis, so it is bibliographic in nature. The conclusions show how the dynamics of the context acted in the essay of the document. And, despite of this, it was possible to move forward in some jagged aspects - youth and education - which also presented their limitations. An important “preferential option for young people” was defined as one of the pastoral priorities, and education was defined as one of the means for communion and participation. (shrink)

The literature presents a broad approach to Corporate Social Responsibility, which aggregates a diversity of issues, such as the environment, labor conditions, and human rights. We addressed the impact of increasing CSR demands during the internationalization of emerging market multinationals on one particular subject, animal welfare. This subject raises important ethical concerns, especially as we understand that animals are sentient beings. Through content analysis of annual reports, we tracked the evolution of AW-CSR activities throughout the internationalization of two large Brazilian (...) meat-processing multinationals as they accessed markets with complex AW regulations. We also synthetized findings on broiler chicken on-farm AW research in Brazil and conducted interviews to gauge the impact of CSR standards on animals. Our findings show that, although EMNs that enter developed markets engage with various standards, the impacts of standard enforcement on actual welfare are not straightforward and call for broader AW and animal ethics developments. Uneven results among AW criteria indicate that some aspects are prioritized over others. Furthermore, some actions of actors such as EMNs and low-tier suppliers seem to counterbalance the expected impact of normative pressures to change the lives of animals for the better. We conclude that AW standards may improve AW in emerging markets; but these standards do not appear to be sufficiently stringent, and require improvements to have a more significant positive impact. A major signal emerging from this research is the fundamental need to broaden the animal ethics debate regarding the use of animals to produce meat. (shrink)

The evolution of boundedly rational rules for playing normal form games is studied within stationary environments of stochastically changing games. Rules are viewed as algorithms prescribing strategies for the different normal form games that arise. It is shown that many of the “folk results” of evolutionary game theory, typically obtained with a fixed game and fixed strategies, carry over to the present environments. The results are also related to some recent experiments on rules and games.

In this work, I attempt to outline a critical history of Jansenism and its reception, especially in Pascal. In particular, in the first part, I will outline the interpretive lines that led to the formation of Jansenist thought and its main ideas, concerning the interpretation of predestination. In the second part, I will turn my attention to Jansenism as conceived in Port-Royal, with particular regard to Pascal’s interpretation and use of Jansen’s ideas, especially in relation to the complex dialectical relationship (...) that Pascal’s Jansenism entertains with the sciences. _ Professional development is a critical concept in the literature on teaching and teacher education. However, in this literature, continuous growth (learning)—e.g., improve teaching strategies, elaborate a variety of activities or integrate new technologies into their practice—is not distinguished from (crisis-like) change to qualitatively different forms of experience—e.g., engage students in learning, implement student-centered practices, consider students' individual needs and further learning. Based on a case study of the change a Brazilian teacher experienced over the course of an 8-year period, (...) we develop an approach based on ideas of the Russian psychologist L. S. Vygotsky that not only theorizes a distinction between learning and development but also the articulation between the two processes whereby continuous change turns into discontinuous change. _. Pascal e Camus ousaram pensar os limites do homem em meio a momentos históricos de hegemonia do racionalismo. Suas indagações nos remetem à contestaçáo de conceitos caros à filosofia, tais como razáo, justiça e história lançando lúcida suspeita sobre os alicerces da civilizaçáo ocidental. Veremos, nos dois autores, a crítica implacável das pretensões racionalistas e a denúncia dos impasses e das frustrações resultantes das escolhas da modernidade.

O presente trabalho pretende discutir a solução de Kripke para o chamado “problema de Frege”, no que concerne a nomes próprios genuínos. Procuraremos mostrar que tal solução não consiste em dizer que espécie de informação nos é dada pelos enunciados de identidade envolvendo nomes de indivíduos – estratégia esta usada por Frege e Searle –, mas sim em estabelecer o caráter _a posteriori_ e ao mesmo tempo necessário de tais enunciados. Tentaremos mostrar ainda que isso não implica que a teoria (...) de Kripke sobre nomes próprios não possa dizer que tipo de informação nos é dada por tais enunciados e que, se ela pretende fazê-lo, talvez ela tenha que conceder que nomes próprios estão ligados a descrições definidas em um nível epistêmico ou, ao menos, em um nível epistêmico-científico – o que, a rigor, em nada afeta a principal tese semântico-metafísica de Kripke a esse respeito: a tese de que nomes próprios são designadores rígidos. This article discusses the extent to which Global Value Chain governance may lead to animal welfare improvement and help to alleviate animal suffering in food producing chains. Our approach relied on scrutinizing two of the most used compulsory certification templates which are enforced by major buyers to their suppliers in order to assure responsible activity in the farmed fish chain and in the wild-captured fish chain. Since fish may experience intense suffering in regular activities involved in catching, maintenance, transport and (...) management, we analyzed whether those instruments can contribute to improve the welfare of fish. Although positive outcomes may be expected in aquaculture production, serious welfare issues regarding wild-capture fish are brought to the fore and preliminary action is proposed. We present recommendations for improving the positive impacts of such certification schemes in GVCs and argue that sustainability-driven standards could also embrace more AW-focused criteria in order to contribute with reducing unnecessary animal suffering in the fish chain.
